What is in a name?
Adua means: "The man who went down to bring water out"
Adua is the name of our great grandfather who once lived in Amogrebisi, a suburb of Sumbrungu over three centuries ago. We are told he was a hardworking man, who spend three years digging a well to provide water for his community. He had many large farm lands, which he later distributed to his four sons. With the same spirit of his (great) grandfather Adua, the lodge owner established a beautiful and decent restaurant and bar in the year 2000. Twenty years later, the restaurant was extended to it's current state including the a serene lodge (Adua Lodge).
The meaning of Adua?
History tells us that during the time of our (great) grandfather Adua, water was very scarce in the vicinity. In his passionate desire to help he single-handedly spent three years digging to create an underground well which supplied water to the entire community.
The people believed he must have had supernatural powers to be able to do that and referred to him as the Great Man who went underground to bring water for his people and delivered them from thirst. In the frafra language, he was referred to as “Adua sege tinga Namkolka” meaning Adua- the man who went down to bring water out. This well supplied the drinking water for both humans and animals in the community for several years. ADUA Lodge is named after this great, great grandfather of the lodge owner and director.
Our motivation
Around the year 2000, there were no decent eating or drinking places in the whole of the Sumbrungu area. The descendants of Adua saw that both the natives and visitors to Sumbrungu town needed a decent place to eat and drink.
Similar to the time of our great grandfather Adua, who thirsted for water and dug a great well. It is this modern day thirst, that moved one of the grandsons of Adua to step in to help. With the same spirit of his grandfather Adua, he established a small, but decent restaurant and bar and called it Adua Gardens off the Bolgatanga – Navrongo main road. The potential customers were the natives of the Sumbrungu and people travelling along on the highway to Navrongo, Paga and even Burkina Faso. Also, people who wanted to come out of the busy Bolgatanga town centre and the Bolgatanga Polytechnic Community-could come to the restaurant (which is about 10 km from Bolgatanga township). As the restaurant of to Adua Gardens was growing, customers started to request for accommodation to stay out of town.
It was to satisfy the request of customers of Adua Gardens, the Polytechnic Community and the general public that this hospitality facility was established -Adua Lodge- to cater for a comfortable and serene accommodation, delicious food and drinks, all under one roof.
The Accomodation
The Lodge is situated right on the Bolgatanga –Navrongo Highway, approximately 10 minutes’ drive from centre of Bolga town. The Lodge is a low budget Hotel which provides bed and breakfast. It has 12 self- contained rooms, and we hope to expand soon to include other facilities such as a conference auditorium, gym, swimming pool and other recreational facilities. There are a lot of things to do around the town (go to: to do around). The rooms are all furnished with fans, a TV, a desk, a coach and some have air conditioners.
